MESPILUS germanica

A tree-like shrub, 2.5 m tall; leaves long, lanceolate, non-glossy green; flowers white, 4 to 5 cm across, appearing in May/June; fruits brownish green at first, later bronze-coloured, 3 to 4 cm thick, after frost the fruits are edible, with a sweet-sour (marmelade-like) taste. A traditional fruit plant for free-growing hedges, planting on public grounds, around housing settlements and in villages. S. Zone 5a.
