Large shrub or small tree with a broad crown, 5 to 8m tall and wide; twigs glossy reddish-brown to black-brown; alternate foliage, 7 to 12 cm long, broad and rounded with a heart-shaped base; young foliage bright red, later dark brownish red, persistent into autumn; many purple-pink pea-like flowers in short racemes that appear on older branches (caulifloric) prior to the foliage in April and May – a very attractive, healthy woody ornamental with good winter hardiness, drought- and heat-tolerant; an eye-catcher for all garden and landscape situations. Prefers sandy, well-drained loam soils; protection from frost recommended for younger plants. D, K, S, St. hardiness zone 6b. LB 6.4.3.2.
